NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The USS Iwo Jima is scheduled to sail from Naval Station Norfolk for a four-month deployment to eight nations in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

The multipurpose amphibious assault ship and its crew of 1,100 sailors and 500 Marines is set to deploy Monday as part of the Navy's "Continuing Promise" commitment in the region.

The Navy says the Iwo Jima's mission to the region is to foster partnerships and build relationships.
