RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Commonwealth Transportation Board is moving forward with a $7.8 billion plan to improve the state's roads and railroads.

The funding in the six-year improvement plan targets essential rail, transit, transportation demand management, bicycle, pedestrian and highway projects.

It includes $5.7 billion for highway construction and $2.1 billion for rail and public transportation. The plan focuses on funding deficits on projects already under way, and deficient bridges and pavements as well as maximizing federal funds.

The board also adopted budgets for the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation.
