ABINGDON, Va. (AP) — A Virginia inmate who threatened President Barack Obama and a prison warden in a letter smeared with his blood will spend an additional 10 years behind bars.
Christopher Coates was sentenced this week in U.S. District Court in Abingdon. The 29-year-old inmate had previously pleaded guilty to threatening the president and mailing threatening communications.
Federal prosecutors say Coates mailed the letter from Red Onion State Prison on March 2, 2009. Coates admitted to Secret Service and FBI agents that he wrote the letter.
