EFLAND, N.C. (AP) — An Amtrak train heading from Charlotte to New York struck a car at a North Carolina railroad crossing, killing two people.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Gordon said the car was crossing tracks in the Orange County town of Efland on Tuesday morning. He said the woman driving was killed along with a 5-year-old boy who was thrown from the back seat.

Gordon said a 3-month-old girl was pulled from the wreckage and taken to University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell in Washington says none of the 215 passengers on the Carolinian were hurt. She said the train would likely be delayed for more than two hours.
