RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina legislature returns to work Wednesday for its budget-adjustment session.

Republicans in charge of the General Assembly say they're committed to increasing salaries for teachers and state employees, who've gotten no raises in four of the past five years. They also plan to talk about Common Core education standards, tax credits for the film industry and how to clean up coal ash ponds owned by Duke Energy.

The cloak of election-year politics will cover the legislature's work. Everything House Speaker Thom Tillis does will be viewed by his critics through the lens of his U.S. Senate campaign. The weekly Moral Monday protests critical of Republican policies also will resume.
