DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Police at North Carolina Central University in Durham say a gunman has been shot and killed near the southeast part of the campus.
Durham police had tracked a suspect thought to be armed onto the campus late Monday, prompting officials to lock down the school about 10:15 p.m.
Police say the man was found in some woods shortly before midnight. Campus Police Chief Tim Bellamy said the man challenged officers with a gun and they fired.
The man's name has not been released.
Police say the gunman was not a student.
The lockdown was lifted shortly after 1 a.m.
The State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
Classes in the School of Education are being relocated Tuesday.
A school spokeswoman did not immediately respond to messages early Tuesday.
