ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A couple has been rescued after spending a frigid night lost on a hiking trail in a national wilderness area in western North Carolina.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that Matt and Linden Jones got lost Sunday night on a trail in the Shining Rock Wilderness Area in southern Haywood County.
The couple used a cell phone to call for help and about 80 rescuers combed the area, but couldn't find them at night. The hikers shared a sleeping bag and built a fire to stay warm in temperatures that dropped into the 20s.
Highway Patrol Trooper Gene Williamson says the couple was found Monday after a helicopter spotted them near a river.
