Va. cities designate storm shelters for pets

PORTSMOUTH (AP) -- Two Virginia cities have designated storm shelters for pets and at least three others are working on plans to establish shelters.
Shelter plans are in place in Portsmouth and Suffolk. Plans are being developed in Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
Some Gulf Coast pet owners wouldn't leave when Hurricane Katrina devastated that region in 2005. The disaster prompted a new federal law that charges emergency planners with finding solutions for pet owners if there is a disaster or emergency.
Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George says Katrina showed there was need to help pet owners.
State Department of Emergency Management spokesman Bob Spieldenner says the shelters will save owners' lives as well as pets' lives.
