Maintenance worker shot to death at Portsmouth apartments

PORTSMOUTH – No bond was granted Monday for a man charged with the murder of an apartment complex maintenance worker.
Officers were called to Whispering Oaks Apartments at 2509 Oakleaf Place around 8:30 a.m. Thursday after someone reported shots being fired in the area.
Investigators found Kevin B. Vass, 36, who'd been shot several times.
Police confirmed what residents at the complex told 13News -- that Vass was a maintenance worker and lived in the complex.
Just after midnight Friday, Eric Roundtree, 39, of Elizabeth City, turned himself in at police headquarters. He's charged with murder.
No motive for the shooting has been released.
Roundtree remains in the Portsmouth City Jail on charges of first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony-1st offense.
He has a hearing on July 10 where he's expected to name his attorney, according to officals at the General District Court clerk's office.

A man was found dead in the back yard of this home.
It was the second homicide in two days in Portsmouth.
On Wednesday morning, a man was found dead behind a home in the 1400 block of Lansing Avenue.
The man, whose name hasn’t been released, was dead in the back yard around 1:00 a.m.
Police say he’d been shot.
