Police: Suspect in pizza deliverman's death admits gang membership

11:14 PM EDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008

PORTSMOUTH -- Last month, police arrested two teenagers in connection with the death of a pizza delivery man. Now, they say one of them is an admitted gang member.

Police say 18-year-old Jamal Mingga and a 17-year-old robbed and shot Robert Kieswetter as he delivered a pizza on Craneybrook Lane.

The two were arrested a week later, and after a raid of Mingga’s home, police documents indicate Mingga is part of a street gang known as YNIC, which has committed a number of random and violent crimes.

A warrant shows police went to Mingga’s home looking for gang paraphernalia and seized a sawed-off shotgun, two rifles and two handguns.

Police say Mingga is also responsible for an assault on Brookmere Lane in October. Police say he is an admitted member of YNIC.

His MySpace page shows several references to the group, and his nickname; “Mally G.”

Police say the YNIC gang attacks random people, which is an unsettling thought for neighbors.

“That sounds really terrible,” said Leslie Coleman. “I hope that’s not going on in our neighborhood.

Bill Emery, a local gang expert, says he knows about the YNIC.

“They’re a local hybrid neighborhood gang,” he explained, saying it was one of many.

Emery says usually they are made up of six to ten people trying to fit in by committing crimes. Police say YNIC has about 25 members.

“Gangs now become an acceptable means as an alternative for the family. So, as we see the family become less visible, we’re going to see gangs become more visible on an increasing basis,” he said.

Emery says in order to prevent kids from joining gangs, parents need to get involved and spend a lot of time with their children.
