RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — It took less than a day after state Sen. Harry Blevins of Chesapeake announced his pending retirement for Republican Del. John Cosgrove to announce his candidacy for Blevins' seat.
Cosgrove posted the announcement on his website Thursday.
The 77-year-old Blevins, a Republican, announced in speech Wednesday on the Senate floor that his retirement would be effective Aug. 5. He cited unspecified health issues for departing with two years left on his four-year term.
The 58-year-old Cosgrove filled Blevins' House seat in 2002 after Blevins won a special Senate election to fill the seat of Randy Forbes, a Republican who had been elected to Congress.
