RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia election officials say heavy turnout is leading to long lines at polling places across the state.

State Board of Elections Secretary Donald Palmer says lines are being processed efficiently and only minor issues are being reported throughout Virginia.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Media outlets report voters began lining up at precincts in Hampton Roads and other areas as early as 4:30 a.m.

Officials say less than a dozen of the about 2,400 polling places statewide didn't open on time. And about the same amount were experiencing problems with voting equipment.

For example, Palmer said some areas, including the city of Covington, had problems with electronic voting equipment and are moving to paper ballots.

Power outages also briefly disrupted voting at some polling places.
