NORFOLK -- The Republican candidate in the 2nd District congressional race is putting conditions on his participation in debates.
Scott Rigell says Kenny Golden, the independent candidate, must demonstrate he has support from 15 percent of the electorate.
"We're happy to debate Kenny Golden. We consider him a friend. We debated him four times in the primaries, but our focus now is on the incumbent," stated campaign manager Jason Miyares.
Miyares says 15 percent is the benchmark for presidential politics.
Golden, a former GOP chairman, responds, "What gives him the right to pick and choose who debates?
A political strategist at the Regent University says Rigell's decision isn't a smart one.
"When you are a challenger, you need to take on all comers. He needs to show strength. This shows weakness," states Chuck Dunn, the dean of the Robertson School of Government.
Jennifer Koch, Glenn's campaign manager, says, "Glenn is excited and ready to discuss the issues that affect Virginia's second district. He believes the debates should be open, and he will be at the podium August 19th. Glenn is glad that Kenny has already committed to this debate and he sincerely hopes Scott will join them. This election is important and the voters deserve to have all the information they need to make the best choice come November 2."
The 2nd District includes all of Accomack and Northampton counties, the City of Va. Beach and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
