NORFOLK -- The race for the 2nd District congressional seat is a virtual tie between incumbent Democrat Glenn Nye and GOP challenger Scott Rigell, according to a 13News-Virginian Pilot-Christopher Newport University poll.

It shows Rigell with 41.5% and Nye with 41.0%.

The poll, conducted October 15-21, was answered by 490 likely voters - those who are registered to vote and plan to vote in the Nov. 2 election.

If respondents were to vote on the day they took part in the poll, Independent Kenny Golden would receive 5.1%; undecided voters accounted for 12.4%.

Voters also were asked about issues important to them this election.  Jobs and the economy were the most important issues getting voters to the ballot box. That was followed by the federal deficit and spending and the new health care law.

Results for the full sample have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4% at the 95% confidence level.

Professor Quentin Kidd will be taking viewers' questions in a live chat on WVEC.com about the 2nd District poll and the race. It begins tonight after Patrick Terpstra's story airs on 13News at 6 and will continue until 7:00 p.m.
