USS Cole, under tow, after Yemen bombing
Today marks the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Norfolk-based USS Cole.
On October 12, 2000, al-Qaeda terrorists blasted a hole in her side as she sat in port in Aden, Yemen.
17 sailors were killed and another 39 were injured in the blast.
A wreath laying ceremony honoring the sailors will be held this afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery. During the 4:00 p.m. service, the Gold Medal of Remembrance will be presented to the children of those who died on USS Cole. Children not at the service will receive the medal by mail.
The ship is deployed to the Persian Gulf, conducting maritime security operations in the war on terror.
