Man gets 30-year sentence for killing teen in Norfolk restaurant

NORFOLK – A 19-year-old Norfolk man was sentenced Friday to 30 years for the murder of a teen trying to protect his mother at a restaurant in November 2007.

Dwayne Deshawn Epps pleaded guilty in August to the shooting death of 15-year-old Dominic Young during a robbery at Enlanka Restaurant on Church Street.  

EPPS SENTENCE DETAILS:

First Degree Murder: 30 years, 18 years suspended
Attempted Robbery: 10 years
Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony: 3 years
Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony: 5 years

Three others were charged in the crime. Troy Wilkins, 15, pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing on November 7; a 14-year-old juvenile is already serving time; a third teen, 15-year-old Bandela Simmons, is awaiting trial on February 25, 2009, said Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie.
