Navy: Mortar round found at Norfolk apartment was inert
06:04 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
NORFOLK – The Navy says a 60-millimeter mortar round, likely military, was inert and 50 or 60 years old.
It gave residents quite a scare when the device, with an attached fuse, was spotted next to a trash dumpster at an apartment complex on Fort Worth Avenue.
Rick Talley, a former weapons specialist with the U.S. Marine Corps, sounded the alarm.
"It's got a range of 25-50 feet," Talley determined.
The Navy removed the device and took it to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown for testing.
