Bug bomb sparks Norfolk duplex fire, investigators say

NORFOLK – A house fire early Tuesday was sparked by bug bomb/foggers, the second such case in two days.
Investigators found smoke and flames in the duplex at 1603 E. Indian River Road.
Five people live in the two-story home, but only one person was home at the time, on the second floor.
Three foggers were being used at the time, according to fire officials.
“The pilot light on the stove was the ignition source. The propellant in the fogger created a flammable gas/vapor concentration which caused it to ignite,” Norfolk Fire Chief Todd Cannon told WVEC.com.
"If they are not used properly, they can cause fire or explosions," he cautioned.
No one was hurt.
In Hampton Sunday night, a fogger too close to the stove started a fire Sunday night at Lincoln Apartments
No one was hurt in that fire, but the Red Cross helped several people who couldn’t stay in their units.
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends placing the active fogger at least 6 feet or further from all ignition sources, such as a flame, pilot light or spark from an electrical appliance that cycles on and off (e.g. refrigerator or air conditioner).
The Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia is supplying residents of the duplex with food and lodging.
