OBERLIN, Ohio (AP) — A police report says an Oberlin College student who acknowledged posting racist fliers around campus earlier this year intended them as a "joke" to provoke an overreaction.
The student's statement to campus security says he also took credit for hanging a Nazi flag and posting the face of the school president on a picture of Adolf Hitler, but denied responsibility for earlier racist postings.
The student says in statements after being detained Feb. 27 that he printed out about 1,000 anti-Islam fliers and had also printed out a page of racist cards. The student's name is blacked out in police documents.
Police declined to file charges but Oberlin College spokesman Scott Wargo said Friday the student and another detained the same day are going through the school's disciplinary system.
