7/24 UPDATE: Norfolk Police have determined this case to be a murder/suicide. 43 year old Karla M Mihok died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. An 8-year-old girl also died on the scene from a gunshot wound.

NORFOLK -- People in Hyde Park watched for hours Wednesday as police investigated the deaths of a woman and a girl whose bodies were found inside a home in the 400 block of Woodford Street.

Neighbors said the bodies were those of a mother and her eight-year-old daughter who had special needs.

"I'm sitting here, looking at this house, and I know these people. The girls have sold me girl scout cookies. They come and play with the dogs. They run around. They're always in the yard. The woman's always chatty and very friendly," Samantha Jordyn told 13News Now. "Everybody loved them. They'd go play with the other children in the neighborhood. Always in their front yard, too, just playing . They had a whole bunch of toys and stuff."

Norfolk Police Department spokeswoman Corporal Melinda Wray said emergency workers got a call about a suspicious situation and a possible death at about 2:40 p.m. When crews got to the home, they found the bodies of a woman and a girl. Their deaths are classified as "undetermined."

"She was like a little sister to me. I cared about her a lot," shared an 18-year-old neighbor, who asked not to be identified, as she talked about the five-year-old.

"When I walk by, I always say, 'Hi' to her, and she'd blow me kisses," the neighbor told 13News Now. "She couldn't really talk, but it was like she was saying hi in her own way."

Neighbors said the mother lived in the home with the eight-year-old and another daughter who is five years old. They told 13News Now the younger girl didn't seem to be home at the time of the incident. They added the woman was married.

Late Wednesday, Norfolk police had not said if, in fact, the people found dead were mother and daughter. They did say detectives were not looking actively for anyone in connection to the deaths.
