5/9 UPDATE: At 1:10 a.m., Benjamin Powell surrendered without incident after a five-hour standoff at the Days Inn in the 1900 block of Coliseum Drive in Hampton. Friends say they're grateful no one was hurt.
Elijah Henderson says Powell's a good guy who's gotten into some trouble with the law.
"He's not a monster that this situation makes him look like, he'd give the shirt off of his back to a stranger if he needed it, said Henderson. 
Police say a tip to Crime Line led them to the motel.

9:45 p.m. UPDATE: SWAT teams are currently on scene at a Days Inn in Hampton where suspect Benjamin Powell is believed to be holed up.

Powell's best friend tells 13News Now the suspect's mom is at the hotel trying to convince him to surrender. 

Authorities have been searching for Powell who is said to have pulled a gun on officers following a traffic stop late Wednesday. 

Police say he is still considered to be armed and dangerous.

9 a.m. UPDATE: Hampton Police haven't found Powell; roads have reopened; Hampton Schools says it's okay to send the students to bus stops. School will start at 10 a.m. at the three locations.

6:25 a.m. UPDATE: Hampton PD getting ready to initiate an extensive and thorough search in the residential areas. Residents will see officers in and around their areas. 
One of their search dogs, Diesel, is being used. 
Virginia State Police resources include tactical team, helicopter, command center and manpower.

5:42 a.m. UPDATE:  Virginia State Police tell WVEC.com a trooper tried to stop a vehicle on Interstate 64 for reckless driving, but the driver kept going and got off the Interstate.  Police say the driver fled once it got into Hampton, leaving two people in the vehicle.  

One of the passengers owns the car. When a trooper arrived, she said she didn't know the man who'd been driving, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya.
"She stated that they had been drinking and met this subject at a party and he hadn't been drinking, thus, he offered to drive her vehicle," she explained.
Hampton Police spotted the man shortly after and a shooting incident occurred.

HAMPTON -- A manhunt is underway for a man who pulled a gun on Hampton police officers during a traffic stop.  

The situation has put three Hampton City schools -- Kraft Elementary, Phenix Pre- K-8 and Bethel High - on a two-hour delay. A Connect Ed auto dial call went out at 5:30 a.m.  School officials say buses of students who live near Big Bethel and Village Drive that transport gifted and ESL students may be delayed.

"This delay is impacting about 3,400 students," Hampton Schools spokeswoman Diana Gulotta told WVEC.com.

Calvary Classical School Carline is scheduled to open at 10:05 a.m. and its kindergartens will not meet today.

Checkpoints have been set up in the area of Big Bethel Road and Village Drive to search vehicles and police have closed Village Drive.  This is in the Hampton Woods neighborhood.

Police say Benjamin Tyler Powell pulled a gun on officers following a traffic stop in the 1100 block of Big Bethel,   The 24-year-old bailed from the car around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and officers spotted him in the back of the Michaels Woods Plaza, said Cpl. Mary Shackelford.   That's when he pulled the gun and officers fired in his direction, she added. It's not known if Powell was hit.

Powell, who was last known to live on Eubank Drive, is wanted for attempt maiming, brandishing a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  Warrants are out for his arrest for probation violation and failure to appear.

Powell was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, light blue pants and a baseball cap.
