Swastika

VIRGINIA BEACH - It’s a symbol of hate and it's making a Virginia Beach neighborhood uneasy.

Someone painted a swastika on a large shipping container on the corner of Ole Towne Lane and South Lynnhaven Road, which is a heavily- traveled area of Va. Beach.  The area has culturally-diverse businesses, including Chinese, Vietnamese and African American stores.

Tamara McCain works in the Essel Salon and Spa and is unnerved at the sight.

"I don't think that's good for the community or for the area period for our businesses, just think it's bad you know," he said.

Casandra Ellis said she noticed the swastika when she walked by it one night.

“… I saw it and I mean I felt a little bit scared because I was by myself, you know what a swastika means," she added.

A man who lives nearby said the Virginia Beach zoning department has been informed and he’s expecting the swastika will be removed.

According to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being" and is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. It was used for thousands of years before becoming a symbol of Nazi Germany.
