Update 6/15: The Currituck County Sherriff's Office confirmed that the body of 14-year-old Justin Greene was found just before 8:30 Sunday morning.
His body was discovered north of the Wright Memorial Bridge in Point Harbor in the same vicinity where the kayak was found on Friday.
CURRITUCK COUNTY—Search crews will resume looking for a teenage kayaker in the Currituck Sound early Sunday morning.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office tells 13News Now the search turned from a rescue effort to a recovery operation Saturday, 24 hours after a the 14-year-old was last seen.
Authorities say witnesses saw the boy fishing in a kayak near the western side of the Wright Memorial Bridge Friday around 10 a.m.
About an hour later, a crabber in the area came across an empty kayak with fishing gear inside.
"When he pulled in one of his crab pots, located a fishing pole attached to one of them,” said Jesse Taylor, a Sheriff’s deputy. “Just following that, he located the kayak still floating in the water."
The Coast Guard suspended its search for the missing kayaker earlier in the day Saturday with plans to resume efforts Sunday.
The name of the kayaker has not been released, pending the notification of family.
The Sheriff’s Office does not believe the teenager was wearing a life jacket.
