Shipyard working around the clock to finish carrier

NEWPORT NEWS (AP) -- Employees of Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard are working around the clock to finish construction of the ship named after former President George H.W. Bush before his son's term as president ends in January.
The commissioning of the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush is now set for January 10th in Norfolk.
The carrier originally was scheduled to be complete in April, but the schedule was adjusted in December 2004 to reflect a Nov. 11, 2008, delivery. Now, Northrop says, the ship won't be delivered until the end of the year.
To speed things, the company is requiring many of its hourly workers to work overtime and has increased the number of contract workers on the ship. Salaried workers also have been asked to put in longer hours.
