05:35 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 22, 2008
NORFOLK – It’s that time of year again – time to get your flu shot.
The Norfolk Department of Public Health is offering them Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ocean View Senior Center at 600 East Ocean View Avenue.
Seniors, age 65 and older, need to have their Medicare part B cards and any other health coverage insurance cards.
The vaccination non-Medicare, non-Medicaid and non-VFC clients is $30.
A second clinic will be held November 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center at 7300 Newport Avenue
Meantime, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth has flu shots for TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries. You can also get one at Sewells Point Clinic at Norfolk Naval Station; Admiral Joel T. Boone Clinic at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base; Oceana Naval Air Station; Naval Support Activities Northwest Annex in Chesapeake; Yorktown Naval Weapons Station; and TRICARE Prime Clinic Virginia Beach and TRICARE Prime Clinic Chesapeake.
For information about hours of operation at those sites, call the flu line at 757-953-3045.
Vaccination with the nasal spray flu vaccine (Flumist) is recommended for healthy, non-pregnant people age 2 to 49 years. The traditional flu shot injection is approved for children age 6 months to 2 years, adults 50 years and older, pregnant women, and patients with chronic medical conditions.
Hospital officials say Flumist has been shown to be 20 to 30 percent more effective than the shot for preventing the flu in children.
