Coast Guard settles violations at Portsmouth base
05:03 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
PORTSMOUTH (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has agreed to pay more than $9,000 in fines and to spend $89,000 to update equipment to settle hazardous waste and Clean Air Act violations at its Portsmouth facility.
The Environmental Protection agency said Wednesday that the Coast Guard agreed to replace an X-ray machine with a digital version, eliminating 906 pounds of hazardous waste annually.
The Environmental Protection Agency cited the Coast Guard after a 2005 inspection of its Integrated Support Command facility found it was operating a hazardous waste storage facility without a permit and that it failed to label universal waste batteries, maintain training records and maintain air pollution control equipment.
