Theodore Roosevelt strike group deploys
12:19 PM EDT on Monday, September 8, 2008
NORFOLK -- Over the next five days the ships, sub, and aircraft of the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group will deploy from Norfolk and other locations along the east coast.
More than 7,000 sailors will leave Hampton Roads.
Theodore Roosevelt is the first to leave Monday afternoon. The carrier will perform ongoing duties of security on the high seas.
The strike group just recently returned from a joint exercise that involved coalition forces from France, Britain, Peru, and Brazil. Working with their militaries, the strike group carried out training that simulated real world situations.
During this deployment, TR will lead the way on several missions that could include maritime security, crisis response, and projecting the US Navy's presence where needed.
The Navy has not said how long the ships will be at sea, but a typical deployment lasts six months.
