Gloucester Coastie killed during training accident in Hawaii
12:11 PM EDT on Monday, September 8, 2008
GLOUCESTER- The family of a Coast Guardsman is mourning the death of their son during a training exercise in Hawaii.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Nichols was on an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter that crashed in the water near Coast Guard Station Honolulu on Thursday night.
Nichols and two others were killed; the search for the pilot has been suspended.
Nichols, 27, a flight mechanic, leaves behind a wife and a little boy.
According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the line used to lower a rescue basket to the sea apparently malfunctioned, said Rear Adm. Manson Brown, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Commander.
It's unclear whether the line contributed to the helicopter's crash.
Also, the fuselage and "black box" of the helicopter have been retrieved for examination.
