NORFOLK (AP) -- The Navy says the attack submarine North Carolina is getting a new commanding officer.
Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding
USS North Carolina was delivered to the Navy on February 21, 2008.
Commander Wes Schlauder relieved Captain Mark Davis Monday at Naval Station Norfolk.
The $2.4 billion Virginia-class submarine joined the service's fleet of more than 50 subs in May and is the fourth in its class. It is homeported in Groton, Connecticut.
The North Carolina was designed to attack land and sea targets with cruise missiles and torpedoes, or sail into shallow waters to monitor enemy transmissions or drop off SEAL teams.
Built in Virginia, the North Carolina is 337 feet long, weighs 7,800 tons and can operate at more than 25 knots when submerged.
