NORFOLK -- Five local Navy ships left port Monday, but they're headed for war duty.

The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, guided missile cruisers USS Leyte Gulf and USS Monterey and the guided missile destroyers USS The Sullivans and USS Nitze are headed to New York for Fleet Week.

The ships will parade into New York Harbor Wednesday morning, along with three Canadian navy vessels.

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter from Boston will take part in Fleet Week activities.

Fleet Week, New York City's celebration of the sea services, begins Wednesday and ends May 28.
