Navy will fly to demonstrate noise to residents in potential OLF areas

CAMDEN, N.C. (AP) -- The Navy says it will fly its F/A-18 SuperHornets jets over three potential sites in Virginia and two in North Carolina during the next 12 months to show residents what type of noise they would face if a practice landing field was built near them.

"What we intend to do is, first of all, develop flight tracks specific to each site," Ted Brown, spokesman for the U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Command, told 13News. "Once we do that, then pick a time, publicize the event in advance, so the people would know when it's going to be, and then, actually, take a Super Hornet aircraft and fly as close to the actual pattern that we could."

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported Tuesday that the Navy told residents about the demonstration flights during a public meeting. Navy officials are studying sites on the border of Camden and Currituck Counties, while another is spread between Gates and Hertford Counties. There are also three sites in Virginia; spread out between Surry, Prince George, Sussex and Southampton Counties.

Some residents in northeastern North Carolina have said they oppose the landing field because it would ruin their rural lifestyle and farming.

"One of the biggest frustrations being voiced to us is that they are not able to find out right now what the noise impacts will be at their homes, at their churches, or their schools, whatever area of concern they have. That's because we have not yet developed site-specific flight tracking or done noise modeling," explained Brown.

"Any aditional information that we can provide the public, we think that it's i the public interest to increase their knowledge about the project and its potential impacts."

The Navy emphasizes there will not be continuous fly-overs during the course of 12 months, but rather one-time demonstrations in each county sometime in the next 12 months.
