NORFOLK-The guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon is headed for duty in the 6th Fleet area.

The crew left Naval Station Norfolk on Wednesday to take part in Ballistic Missile Defense operations, the Navy said.

The ship received the Ballistic Missile Defense upgrade in March 2011, after it got home from a counter-piracy deployment.

This is the first deployment for many of the crew, their first chance to see what a year of training has prepared them for, officials stated.

They'll be gone seven months on this regularly-scheduled deployment.
