NORFOLK -- Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks is in Norfolk for the filming of the movie "Captain Phillips," based on the real-life hijacking of Maersk-Alabama in 2009 and his rescue by Navy SEALs.
Photos of the bearded actor at the Navy Exchange, aboard the submarine USS Montpelier and elsewhere aboard Naval Station Norfolk were posted on the base's Facebook page.
Hanks plays Capt. Richard Phillips, who agreed to be taken hostage as long as the Somali pirates didn't hurt his crewmembers.
SEALs, staged on the Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge, fired on the pirates, killing three of them and capturing a fourth.
Filming in Hampton Roads is expected to run through the end of the month.
The movie has an expected release date of March 2013.
