Iwo Jima ARG deployment could last 8 months

NORFOLK (AP) -- Three Hampton Roads-based amphibious ships deployed Tuesday and could be gone as long as eight months.

More than 4,000 sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, the amphibious dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall and the amphibious transport dock USS New York left Norfolk Naval Station, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek and Camp Lejeune, NC.

The ships will patrol the Navy's Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas, which include parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The 24th MEU is comprised of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which includes a Ground Combat Element, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment; Aviation Combat Element, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261 (Reinforced); Logistics Combat Element, Combat Logistics Battalion 24; and a Command Element.
