Army Chief Warrant Officer Bryan Nichols, 31, of Kansas City, Kan., piloted the U.S. Chinook helicopter that was taken down by Taliban insurgents on Aug. 6. The son of a Vietnam veteran, Nichols enlisted in the military after high school and completed multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife and 10-year-old son, Braydon.
