RICHMOND -- The names of 40 Virginia servicemembers killed in the line of duty are now on Virginia’s Wall of Honor at the Virginia War Memorial.

Many who gave their lives are from Hampton Roads, including those killed August 6, 2011 when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed in Afghanistan.

Gov. Bob McDonnell laid a wreath at the memorial during a solemn ceremony attended by many of the fallen servicemembers' family and friends.

He said Memorial Day takes on special importance because Virginia is home to so many members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

About 2,000 people attended today's service.
