NORFOLK - The Virginia National Guard has several hundred personnel ready to respond once Sandy strikes the state.

About 200 of the 500 Army Guard and Virginia Defense Force personnel are in the Hampton Roads and Eastern Shore area waiting for the call to help in any situation.

"From where we have them staged, they can quickly get anywhere in the area," said spokesman Cotton Puryear.

The extra personnel are on standby to answer the call to duty if needed.

"The key to rapid response is positioning personnel and equipment in key locations before the severe weather hits,” explained Col. Jim Ring, director of joint operations for the Virginia National Guard.
