Va. National Guard on duty in Portsmouth, Gloucester

PORTSMOUTH -- Dozens of soldiers from the Virginia National Guard were called to duty in Portsmouth, Gloucester and elsewhere in Virginia to help first responders during the storm.   

9 soldiers from the Portsmouth-based 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry, 116th Brigade Combat Team used a Humvee and a 5-ton truck to help fire and police. VNG officials say they helped with rescue of nine people overnight, including a mother and her young daughter who had a high fever. They were evacuated to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

2 soldiers and a 5-ton truck assisted Gloucester officials Friday morning with damage surveys and inspections.

Other soldiers are deployed in Danville.
