NORFOLK (AP) -- The Norfolk-based USS Oscar Austin has a new commanding officer.

The guided-missile destroyer held a change of command ceremony Monday during a port visit to Port Louis, Mauritius.

Cmdr. Brian Diebold is the ship's new skipper. He's a University of South Carolina graduate who is originally from Brownsburg, Ind. He enlisted in the Navy in 1988. He previously served as the Oscar Austin's executive officer.

He relieved Cmdr. Charlos Washington, a Naval Academy graduate from Lithonia, Ga. who received his commission in 1994. Washington was awarded the Meritorious Service medal for his performance as commanding officer from April 2011 to October.

Washington's next job will be at the Naval Strike and Warfare Center at Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada.
