NORFOLK (AP) -- The USS Enterprise has transited through the Suez Canal for the last time.
The Navy says the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier entered the Mediterranean Sea on Friday. The ship is on its last deployment after more than 50 years of service. Before entering the Mediterranean Sea, the Enterprise was operating in the Navy's 5th Fleet area of responsibility. That area includes the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean.
Passing through the Suez Canal marks the beginning of the carrier's journey home after seven months at sea.
The Navy will hold a deactivation ceremony at the carrier's homeport in Norfolk in December.
