PERSIAN GULF -- Two Norfolk-based ships are training to destroy mines in the Persian Gulf.

It's the biggest defensive exercise to ever take place in the Middle East.

The USS Ponce and the Gunstan Hall are in the middle of the exercise.

The goal is to prevent extremist groups from using mines to block international waterways.
