NORFOLK- A morning of remembrance at Naval Station Norfolk on Friday as friends and family gathered at IOWA POINT to remember 47 sailors killed in an explosion aboard the battleship Iowa.

On April 19, 1989, gun turret 2 exploded. The explosion ripped through the 16" inch gun turret.  The Navy said the Iowa was still able to deploy to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea in mid-year. Turret Two remained unrepaired when she decommissioned in Norfolk on October 26, 1990.

The Navy initially said a crewmember caused the explosion and, after other reviews, no definitive cause could be determined.
