NEWPORT NEWS -- The new year will bring a new way of doing some things for the Army and Air Force on the Peninsula.
Management functions of Langley AFB and Fort Eustis will be combined to form Joint Base Langley-Eustis, as called for in the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process.
"The truth of the matter is the soldiers for Ft. Eustis should not see any change at all in the level of service and the airmen and civilians that I take care of down at Langley shouldn't either," stated Col. Kevin Altman, 1st Mission Support Group commander.
Leaders at both installations say the transition should be seamless, although Langley will take the lead on installation management of the Army post.
"We've become more and more involved jointly over the years, so it's less of an impact, I think, that some might realize," noted Col. Glenn Grothe, garrison commander at Fort Eustis.
A similar restructuring occurred between the Army and Navy on the Southside. In October, Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek and Fort Story became Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.
