SAN DIEGO, CA - An enlisted sailor playing with an airsoft pistol prompted a shelter in place at Naval Base Point Loma on Thursday.

Base commander Capt. Scott Adams told reporters that he learned of the report at about 10 a.m., and military security immediately responded to the incident.

Adams said the sailor was firing the pistol through a window from inside a barracks, and a witness observed that action.

After a portion of the base was given a shelter in place order, Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) personnel were able to locate the sailor and took him into custody at about 12:20 p.m. Another sailor linked to the action was also detained.

The shelter in place order has been lifted and the base is secure and back to normal operations, Adams said.

Adams said he was unsure what charges the sailors may face.

No injuries were immediately reported.
