NORFOLK -- Pentagon officials announced Monday that Norfolk-based USS Mesa Verde has been ordered to the Persian Gulf as Iraq worries grow.
The amphibious transport dock ship is being moved into position in case assistance is needed.
Its presence in the Gulf adds to that of other U.S. naval ships already there, including the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush.
USS Mesa Verde is capable of conducting a variety of quick reaction and crisis response operations, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby.
The ship deployed in February as part of the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group.
