NORFOLK -- The Navy has now charged Petty Officer 3rd Class Wilbur B. Harwell of Montgomery, Alabama with attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the June 6 stabbing of another sailor on the grounds of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.
Harwell is accused of stabbing fellow sailor, Master at Arms 2nd Class Justin Powell multiple times, causing a serious laceration across Powell's throat that damaged his trachea.
Court documents filed last month suggest that a fight broke out in the Naval Support Activity Portsmouth Annex barracks between the suspect and victim. Witness accounts say Harwell was wielding a blade and stabbed Powell during the fight.
Witnesses were able to separate the two men when they saw Powell's stab wounds. According to the affidavit, Harwell told a witness that he stabbed the victim several times and "thought the victim might die."
Harwell remains in custody, in an unidentified brig.
