PORTSMOUTH -- A Portsmouth-based Coast Guard cutter returned home Friday following a successful patrol that included making a huge drug bust in the Caribbean.

The crew of USCGC Harriet Lane seized nearly 6,000 pounds of cocaine on December 3.  It has a street value of more than $83 million.

A Customs and Border Protection aircraft spotted the freighter Olympiakos and the cutter intercepted it.

The drugs and 11 people on the freighter were turned over to U.S. authorities and the Harriet Lane returned to patrol duty.

The medium-endurance cutter arrived right on time at the Coast Guard station in Portsmouth, just in time for the holidays.
