NORFOLK -- The Navy's making it a priority to help sailors and Marines with money matters before they get into trouble.
"If people are worried about their finances, if they're consumed, they can't do their job and that's protecting the country. It's not only operational readiness, but we want them to have a better quality of life," states Mary Spear with Fleet and Family Support Centers of Hampton Roads.
With Command Financial Specialist Training, senior enlisted personnel and officers get 40 hours of specialized training on everything from credit scores to buying cars. They take that knowledge and share with shipmates.
Chief Matthew Guilfoy will take what he's learning back to the crew of USS Mitscher.
"It's fantastic and actually, I wish I'd had somebody provide me with a little more direction when I was E-1, E-2, so there's a lot of resources now for the young sailors to keep them on the right path," he notes.
Financial help programs are slated all this month through Fleet and Family Support Centers.
