CHESAPEAKE -- A Navy Submarine Commander has been relieved of duty after investigators say he faked his own death to end an affair with a Chesapeake woman.

Michael P. Ward, II was the Commanding Officer of the Connecticut based submarine, the USS Pittsburgh.

Investigators say Ward sent his mistress in Chesapeake an e-mail from a fake person stating that he had died.

The woman traveled to his former residence in Burke, VA to offer her condolences, where she was told by the new owner that Ward had moved to Connecticut to take command of a submarine.

Ward was found guilty in August of uniform code of military justice violations, including dereliction of duty.
