PORTSMOUTH, Va. —- A 93 year-old man who had suffered a possible head injury was medevced from a cruise ship in the lower Chesapeake Bay early Sunday morning.
The Coast Guard's Fifth District reported that a call was received by Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center watchstanders at about 9 p.m. Saturday from the the Grandeur of the Seas, a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean Cruises, reporting that a passenger aboard had suffered a possible head injury and was in need of medical assistance.
A Coast Guard crew, along with several Virginia Beach Fire Department personnel were dispatched aboard a 45-foot Response Boat from the Coast Guard Station at Little Creek to assist. They arrived alongside the ship at about 1:30 a.m.and transferred the man and his wife to the boat. He was returned to Little Creek where they were met by local emergency medical services personel.
They subsequently transported the man to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he's reported to be in stable condition.
